There are several types of wind energy systems operating today, but the principle is thousands of years old. The basic concept is to take blades that catch the wind and turn. These blades could be hooked to a pump or a generator, but the idea is to take the wind, or mechanical, energy and convert it to electricity. This is what your car does by taking the mechanical energy of the pistons and sending that to the generator which converts it to electrical energy.
One of the first things needed to determine if wind energy is right for you is to find out the wind resource where you want to install the system. This can be done by setting up an anemometer, which is a device that measures wind speed. This should be allowed to get readings over time to determine the average wind speed in the area. This same kind of data can be gotten by reviewing the weather reporters in your area.
You also should find out how much electricity you use. You can find this out simply by looking at the detail on your energy provider bill. It should note on there how much electricity you use every month. This information will allow you to size your system for optimum performance.
The higher the rotors are placed the better the wind velocity. Some areas require permits and have height restrictions. You should always check with your area building code people before beginning an installation. Morton Solar and Wind can tell you the requirements in your area.
A system can be designed to provide partially for your electricity needs or you could install a battery storage system to be able to tap when the grid power goes out for emergency backup power.
There is a variety of systems to choose from and Morton Solar and Wind will work with you to achieve the system that works best for you.
