Southwest Indiana Solar Co-op Reaches 150 Members: What Comes Next

The Southwest Indiana 2026 Solar Co-op has completed its enrollment phase with approximately 150 local residents and organizations signed up to explore solar energy.
That level of participation reflects growing interest among Southwest Indiana homeowners, churches, farms, and other property owners looking for greater control over long-term electricity costs.
Enrollment may be closed, but much of the real work is just beginning. Co-op participants will now move through property assessments, system design, contract decisions, engineering, permitting, and installation.
Why Solar Co-ops Appeal to Property Owners
For many people, the hardest part of going solar is knowing where to begin.
Property owners must consider equipment, warranties, roof conditions, available space, expected energy production, and project pricing. Comparing all those factors independently can quickly become overwhelming.

What Happens After 150 People Sign Up?
Not every co-op member will ultimately install solar.
Solar must be evaluated property by property. Roof orientation, shading, structural condition, electrical service, available ground space, energy consumption, and project timing can all affect whether an installation makes sense.
Based on historical co-op participation patterns cited by organizers, approximately 40 to 50 members may move forward with completed projects. If that estimate holds, the co-op could produce a meaningful wave of residential, agricultural, nonprofit, and light-commercial solar installations across Southwest Indiana.
The impact extends beyond the number of panels installed. These projects represent local construction activity, long-term energy planning, and increased interest in battery-backed power systems.

Morton Solar’s work at Zion Lippe United Church of Christ in Mt. Vernon is one local example. The church already had a ground-mounted solar array, and the Morton team added three high-capacity batteries in the building’s basement.
Brad Morton, president of Morton Electric and Morton Solar, explained:
“We’re adding batteries for backup power and for resiliency, and it helps get their electricity from the solar at retail rate, so it gives them a better return on their investment. Solar can be installed on rooftop or ground-mount systems, or a carport. We install solar on a lot of pole barns. Those are great applications.”
